Beeswax is a natural wax produced by honeybees to construct the honeycomb cells of their hives. One of the oldest cosmetic ingredients in recorded history, it has been used in skincare, lip care, and hair preparations for thousands of years across virtually every culture that kept bees. Its use at Le Silo Bleu is something we are intentional and transparent about. Beeswax is an animal-derived ingredient, which means products containing it are not vegan.

We use beeswax in our lip balms and select solid formulas because of its unique combination of properties, its texture, its skin feel, and its long history of safe, effective use in personal care.

How It Works

Beeswax forms a breathable, protective barrier on the skin that helps lock in moisture without completely occluding the surface. Unlike petroleum-based waxes, it allows the skin to breathe while still providing meaningful protection against moisture loss and environmental exposure. In lip balms it contributes the characteristic smooth, slightly waxy texture that helps the product glide on evenly and stay in place. Its natural vitamin A content adds mild skin-supportive properties.

A Note on Sourcing

We source our beeswax thoughtfully and are transparent that products containing beeswax are not suitable for those following a vegan lifestyle.

For vegan alternatives, we can use candelilla wax in select formulas. Also, you can just let us know if you'd need it and we can make a custom batch for you.
