Botanicals & Herbs
Calendula officinalis
Calendula, also known as pot marigold, is one of the most beloved botanicals in natural skincare and herbalism. Its vivid golden and orange flowers have been used for centuries across European folk medicine traditions as a remedy for skin irritation, wounds, and inflammation. The name comes from the Latin calendae, meaning the first day of the month, because calendula blooms so reliably and abundantly throughout the growing season.
At Le Silo Bleu, calendula is used as a dried botanical in our soap formulas, where it adds warm golden tones, gentle texture, and its longstanding reputation for skin comfort. It is one of the most skin-compatible botanicals available, gentle enough for the most sensitive skin types, including babies. We also use it in infused olive oil for soap and various other products.
How It Works
Calendula contains a rich array of flavonoids, triterpenoids, and carotenoids that are believed to support the skin's natural comfort and healing response. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make it particularly well-suited to formulas designed for sensitive, irritated, or reactive skin. As a botanical addition to cold process soap, it contributes both visual warmth and its gentle botanical character to the finished bar.
