Collection: Castor Oil

Base Oils & Butters

Ricinus communis

Castor oil is a thick, amber-colored oil pressed from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant. Unlike most oils used in soapmaking, castor oil contains a unique fatty acid called ricinoleic acid, not found in significant amounts in any other natural oil, which gives it its remarkable lather-stabilizing properties.

Used in small amounts, castor oil works quietly behind the scenes in our formulas, doing the important job of supporting and extending the lather created by other oils in the bar.

How It Works

Ricinoleic acid acts as a humectant, attracting moisture to the skin and contributing to a creamier, more persistent foam. Even at just 3 to 8% of a formula, castor oil makes a noticeable difference to lather quality, helping bubbles last longer and feel richer during use. The key to castor oil is not to use too much, as doing so causes the soap to feel softer and slimier. The right balance in formulation makes all the difference!
