Citric acid is a naturally occurring weak organic acid found in citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits all contain significant concentrations,and is commercially produced through the fermentation of sugars by the mold Aspergillus niger. It is one of the most widely used ingredients in food, cosmetics, and cleaning products, serving multiple functions including pH adjustment, chelation, and, most famously in personal care,as the acid component that reacts with baking soda to produce the fizzing action in bath and shower formulas.

Citric acid is a foundational ingredient in our shower steamer and bath fizzy formulas,its reaction with sodium bicarbonate is the engine that powers the fizz, releases the fragrance, and creates the immersive sensory experience these products are designed to deliver.

How It Works

When citric acid contacts sodium bicarbonate in the presence of water, an acid-base reaction occurs that produces carbon dioxide gas,the source of the satisfying fizzing and bubbling. This reaction also produces sodium citrate, a mild skin-conditioning chelator. The speed and intensity of the fizz can be modulated by the ratio of citric acid to baking soda and by the addition of cream of tartar as a secondary acid. Citric acid also serves as a pH adjuster in haircare and skincare formulas, helping maintain the slightly acidic pH that is optimal for hair cuticle health and skin barrier function.
