Marshmallow root comes from the Althaea officinalis plant, a tall, soft-leaved herb native to Europe and western Asia that grows naturally in damp meadows and along riverbanks. The original marshmallow confection was actually made from the root of this plant, which produces a thick, slippery mucilage when soaked in water. That mucilage is the key to everything marshmallow root does in skincare and haircare.

Rich in polysaccharides that form a naturally slip-enhancing gel, marshmallow root has been used in European herbal medicine for centuries as a demulcent, an ingredient that soothes and coats irritated surfaces. How It Works

When marshmallow root is infused in water, its mucilaginous polysaccharides create a naturally conditioning, slip-enhancing liquid that coats the hair shaft, eases detangling, and helps define natural curl patterns. It acts as a natural humectant, attracting moisture from the air and sealing it into the hair. For the scalp, it provides gentle soothing and comfort, making it well suited to sensitive or reactive scalp conditions.
