Base Oils & Butters

Olea europaea

Olive oil is one of the oldest cultivated plant oils in the world, pressed from the fruit of Olea europaea, the olive tree. With roots in Mediterranean tradition stretching back thousands of years, it has been used for cooking, medicine, and skin care across cultures for centuries. In soapmaking, it is considered a foundational oil, prized for the mild, conditioning bars it produces.

Its high oleic acid content means it conditions while it cleanses, leaving skin feeling soft and cared for rather than stripped. We use it as the backbone of many of our soap formulas because of this high oleic acid content, balanced with harder oils to ensure a firm, long-lasting bar.

How It Works

In cold-process soapmaking, each oil contributes a different fatty acid profile that shapes the final bar. Olive oil's dominant oleic acid produces a mild, creamy lather with excellent conditioning properties. Bars high in olive oil benefit from a longer cure - typically 6 to 8 weeks, or longer, depending on the percentage we use. This long cure time allows moisture to evaporate and the bar to develop its best hardness and lather.
