Polyquaternium-10, Hydroxyethylcellulose derivative

Polyquaternium-10, commonly abbreviated as PQ-10, is a cationic conditioning polymer derived from cellulose, the primary structural component of plant cell walls. It is one of the most widely used conditioning agents in professional and artisan leave-in haircare formulation, valued for its ability to deposit a lightweight, conditioning film on the hair shaft that improves manageability, reduces static, and adds slip, without the buildup or heaviness that some conditioning agents can cause over time.

In a detangler mist, PQ-10 is a co-conditioning active, delivering the detangling, anti-static, and manageability benefits that make a leave-in treatment genuinely useful rather than merely a nice-to-have.

How It Works

PQ-10's positive (cationic) charge causes it to be attracted to the negatively charged surface of the hair shaft, particularly in areas of cuticle damage where negative charge is highest. This electrostatic attraction deposits PQ-10 evenly and persistently on the hair, smoothing the cuticle, reducing inter-fiber friction, and improving combability. Unlike some cationic conditioners, PQ-10 rinses cleanly when needed and does not accumulate on the hair with repeated use, making it ideal for daily or frequent leave-in application.
