The purple and blue toning pigments in our haircare formulas are cosmetic-grade color-correcting pigments, the same principle used in professional salon toning treatments, adapted for use in our solid shampoo bars. Understanding why they work requires a quick look at color theory, which is as relevant to haircare as it is to painting.

On the color wheel, purple sits directly opposite yellow, and blue sits directly opposite orange. This means that when violet pigment is deposited on yellow-toned hair, it neutralizes the unwanted warmth, canceling it out rather than covering it up. Similarly, blue pigment neutralizes brassy orange tones. Together, purple and blue pigments create a comprehensive color-correcting system that addresses the full spectrum of unwanted warm tones in blonde, grey, highlighted, and color-treated hair.

How It Works

Our Purple Toning Shampoo Bar deposits a small amount of violet and blue pigment onto the hair shaft with each wash, providing what we think of as a mini color-correction session every time you shampoo. The effect is cumulative and adjustable; used once or twice a week it maintains brightness without over-toning, while more frequent use deepens the toning effect for hair that is particularly warm or brassy. The pigments rinse out over time, making the effect buildable and reversible rather than permanent.
