Purple clay is a naturally pigmented cosmetic clay whose distinctive violet-grey tones come from a unique mineral composition, typically a blend of illite with manganese and other trace minerals that produce its characteristic color. Less common than green or pink clay, it is prized in artisan soapmaking for the striking, moody color it imparts to finished bars, a deep, dusky purple that is unlike any other natural colorant.

In our soap formulas, purple clay produces beautiful violet and grey-purple tones that pair naturally with lavender, elderberry, and floral botanical fragrances. Its absorbency and skin feel are similar to pink clay, gentle enough for most skin types while still providing meaningful cleansing and slip.

How It Works

Purple clay's fine mineral particles provide gentle absorbency and slip, lifting surface impurities while contributing a smooth, refined lather texture. Its natural manganese content adds mild antioxidant properties. As a colorant, it produces complex, layered purple and grey tones in cold process soap that deepen during cure — particularly beautiful in swirled or layered soap designs where its depth of color can be fully expressed.
