Collection: Shikakai
Botanicals & Herbs
Acacia concinna
Shikakai, meaning "fruit for hair" in Hindi, is a climbing shrub native to the tropical forests of Asia whose pods, bark, and leaves have been used as a natural hair cleanser across South Asia for centuries. Like aritha, shikakai contains natural saponins that produce a gentle lather when mixed with water, making it one of the oldest plant-based shampoo alternatives in the world.
What makes shikakai particularly special is its naturally low pH, close to the natural pH of hair itself, which means it cleanses without disrupting the hair's acid mantle or causing the cuticle to swell and roughen as alkaline cleansers can. The result is hair that feels cleaner but also smoother and softer after washing.
How It Works
Shikakai's saponins lift dirt and excess sebum from the scalp and hair gently and effectively without stripping. Its low pH keeps the cuticle flat and smooth during cleansing, reducing friction, frizz, and tangling. It also contains vitamins C and D, and antifungal compounds that support a balanced, healthy scalp environment. Traditionally combined with amla and aritha for a complete Ayurvedic hair cleansing ritual.
