Ulmus rubra

Slippery elm is the inner bark of the slippery elm tree, native to the eastern forests of North America, where it has been used by Indigenous communities for centuries as both food and medicine. When mixed with water, the inner bark produces a thick, viscous mucilage, similar in character to marshmallow root, that has long been used to soothe and coat irritated surfaces both internally and topically.

In our haircare formulas, slippery elm is used for its remarkable slip-enhancing and conditioning properties. Its high content of calcium, amino acids, and complex carbohydrates makes it a particularly nourishing botanical for hair that needs strength, elasticity, and ease of detangling.

How It Works

Slippery elm's mucilage coats the hair shaft to reduce friction and improve glide, making detangling easier and reducing breakage. Its amino acid content strengthens the hair structure from the outside, while its calcium content supports follicle health. It is particularly well suited to curly, coily, or damaged hair types where slip, elasticity, and moisture retention are priorities.
