Sugar (Scrub Base)
Functional, Actives & Additives
Sucrose,Saccharum officinarum
In our body scrub formulas, sugar serves its primary role as a gentle physical exfoliant,a role it has played in beauty rituals across cultures for centuries. Sugar scrubs have a long history of use across South Asian, Middle Eastern, and European beauty traditions, where the combination of sweet-smelling, softly abrasive sugar crystals and nourishing oils has been used to soften, brighten, and reveal smoother skin beneath.
What makes sugar an exceptional exfoliant, distinct from salt, which can sting on broken skin, or synthetic microbeads, which are environmentally harmful, is its combination of gentle abrasion, complete water solubility, and natural glycolic acid content that provides a mild chemical exfoliation alongside the physical action.
How It Works
Sugar crystals provide mechanical exfoliation, physically loosening and removing dead skin cells from the skin surface through gentle friction during application. As you rinse, the sugar dissolves completely in water, leaving behind no harsh residue and ensuring the exfoliation is gentle enough for regular use. Sugar's natural glycolic acid content, one of the alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), provides a mild additional chemical exfoliation that supports cell turnover and brightening. The oils surrounding the sugar crystals in our scrub formulas simultaneously condition and nourish as you exfoliate.
