Calophyllum inophyllum
Tamanu oil is cold-pressed from the nuts of the Calophyllum inophyllum tree, which grows throughout tropical regions of Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Madagascar. For centuries, island communities across Polynesia, Melanesia, and the Indian Ocean have used tamanu oil as a traditional remedy for skin healing, applied to wounds, burns, rashes, and scarring. Its striking dark green color and distinctive earthy aroma are unmistakable.
Tamanu oil contains a unique compound called calophyllolide, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent found almost exclusively in this oil, as well as a rich blend of fatty acids and delta-tocotrienols. It is one of the most biologically active plant oils used in natural skincare.
How It Works
Tamanu oil has a remarkable ability to promote the formation of new tissue, a property known as cicatrization, which supports its traditional use in skin healing. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make it particularly useful in formulas targeting blemishes, scarring, or compromised skin. It is typically used in small amounts blended with lighter carrier oils, where its active properties are most effective.
