Learn About Candles

Our Approach to Candle Making

We approach candle making with the same intention and restraint that guides all of our products. Every material is chosen for how it performs, how it burns, and how it contributes to a balanced, well-made candle that gives you a sense of space.

Our candles are designed to burn cleanly, evenly, and reliably when used as directed, with careful attention paid to wax selection, wick choice, fragrance formulation, and testing.

Why We Use Soy Wax

We use soy wax (Soy 464) for its clean-burning properties, smooth appearance, and ability to carry fragrance evenly.

Soy wax is a plant-based wax that allows for:

  • Consistent melt pools when properly wicked
  • A slower, more controlled burn
  • A soft, natural aesthetic

Like all natural waxes, soy wax may show surface variations over time. These characteristics are normal and do not affect candle performance.

Wick Selection Matters

The wick plays a critical role in how a candle burns, how fragrance is released, and how heat is distributed.

We use cotton wicks from the CD series, which are widely respected for their:

  • Consistent burn behavior
  • Stability in soy wax formulations
  • Ability to support even melt pools when paired correctly with the vessels

Each candle is tested to ensure the wick and wax work together as intended.

Fragrance & Standards

Fragrance is an important part of the candle experience, but it must be handled with care.

We source our fragrances from reputable suppliers and formulate each candle in accordance with IFRA (International Fragrance Association) guidelines. These standards are designed to promote responsible use of fragrance materials in consumer products.

This means:

  • Fragrance levels are chosen for balance and safety
  • Each scent is evaluated for proper use in candles
  • Performance is tested alongside burn behavior

We also make sure to use clean scents, formulated without phthalates or ingredients found on California’s Proposition 65 list.

Understanding Fragrance Throw

Fragrance throw refers to how a scent is experienced during use.

  • Cold throw is the scent you notice before lighting the candle
  • Hot throw is the scent released while the candle is burning

A well-made candle balances both without being overpowering. Factors such as room size, air flow, and burn time can influence how fragrance is perceived.

Burn Care & Longevity

Proper candle care supports both performance and longevity.

General guidelines include:

  • Allowing the wax to melt fully across the surface during the first burn
  • Trimming the wick before each use
  • Avoiding drafts while the candle is burning

These practices help encourage an even burn and reduce issues such as tunneling or excess soot.

Safety & Responsible Use

Candles are intended to be enjoyed but with care and attention.

Always:

  • Burn candles on a stable, heat-safe surface
  • Keep away from flammable materials (especially bedding and curtains)
  • Keep away from children and pets
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended

Following basic candle safety practices helps ensure a positive experience. Please read your candle care card that is included with every candle purchase- or the guidelines on the warning label on the bottom of each candle.
