Arnica montana
Arnica is a bright yellow mountain flower native to the alpine and subalpine meadows of central Europe, a botanical with one of the longest and most consistent records of topical use in the European herbal tradition. Found growing across the mountains of Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, it has been used for centuries in folk medicine as a remedy for bruising, muscle soreness, and inflammation. Its common name "wolf's bane" hints at its potency.
In formulas, Arnica is used for its well-documented anti-inflammatory and circulation-supporting properties. It is particularly well-suited to formulas designed for sore muscles, post-exercise recovery, and skin that needs comfort and revitalization.
How It Works
Arnica's key active compounds, helenalin and dihydrohelenalin, are sesquiterpene lactones with potent anti-inflammatory properties that inhibit inflammatory pathways at the skin surface. Its flavonoids provide additional antioxidant support, while its natural thymol content contributes mild antimicrobial properties. Used topically in appropriate formulas, arnica supports comfort, reduces the appearance of bruising, and promotes a sense of relief in tired or overworked muscles.
