Collection: Babassu Oil
Base Oils & Butters
Orbignya oleifera
Babassu oil is cold-pressed from the kernels of the babassu palm, which grows abundantly in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil. Harvested by traditional communities as a sustainable forest resource, babassu is often considered a more sustainable and ethically sound alternative to palm oil. It comes from a wild-harvested tree that does not require deforestation to produce.
With a fatty acid profile similar to coconut oil, babassu contributes cleansing power and bubbly lather to soap formulas while being notably gentler and less likely to feel drying at higher usage rates. It is an excellent choice for those with coconut sensitivities.
How It Works
Babassu's high lauric acid content drives its cleansing and lather-boosting properties, similar to coconut oil. However, its additional oleic and myristic acid content moderates the cleansing intensity, making it a more balanced oil that cleans effectively while retaining more of the skin's natural moisture. It melts at skin temperature, absorbing readily without a heavy residue.
