Baking soda,sodium bicarbonate,is one of the most versatile and universally available natural compounds in the world, found in mineral deposits and produced commercially through the Solvay process. In personal care formulation it serves two distinct functions: as a leavening agent in bath fizzy and shower steamer formulas, where its reaction with citric acid produces the carbon dioxide bubbles that give these products their characteristic fizzing action, and as a mild deodorizing agent in body care formulas.

How It Works

In shower steamers and bath fizzies, sodium bicarbonate reacts with citric acid in the presence of water to produce carbon dioxide gas,the source of the fizzing action. This reaction also produces sodium citrate, a mild skin-conditioning compound. The fizzing releases fragrance molecules and active ingredients rapidly into the water or steam, enhancing their diffusion and sensory impact. Baking soda's mild alkalinity also provides gentle deodorizing properties in body powder formulas, where it helps neutralize odor-causing acids.
