Ocimum basilicum
Basil is native to tropical Asia and has been cultivated across the Mediterranean for over 4,000 years, arriving in France via the spice routes and becoming as essential to Provençal cooking as thyme or lavender. Beyond the kitchen, basil has a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Mediterranean medicine, valued for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and tonic properties.
In skincare basil brings a fresh, herbaceous character and meaningful antioxidant protection. Its high eugenol and linalool content gives it notable antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a useful botanical for formulas targeting congested, reactive, or acne-prone skin.
How It Works
Basil's eugenol content provides antimicrobial activity against the bacteria associated with skin congestion and breakouts, while its rosmarinic acid contributes antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support. Its flavonoids, including orientin and vicenin, provide additional antioxidant protection. Its natural vitamin K content supports skin tone and may help reduce the appearance of dark circles and pigmentation over time.
