Essential Oils
Styrax benzoin / Styrax tonkinensis
Benzoin is a resinoid, technically not an essential oil but a solvent-extracted resin from the bark of the Styrax benzoin tree, native to Sumatra, Java, and Thailand. Its warm, sweet, vanilla-like aroma has made it one of the most beloved fixatives in natural perfumery for centuries, used in incense, perfume, and traditional medicine from ancient Egypt to medieval Europe. Its name comes from the Arabic luban jawi, meaning "incense of Java," which was corrupted through French and Spanish into the name we use today.
In our candle and soap formulas benzoin serves as a warm, balsamic base note and fixative, extending the longevity of other aromatic ingredients and adding a comforting, slightly sweet depth that is deeply inviting and grounding.
