The elder tree is one of the most mythologized plants in European folk tradition, associated with protection, healing, and the boundary between worlds in folklore from Britain to Normandy. It's small, deep-purple berries ripen in late summer and are among the most antioxidant-rich fruits in the European botanical tradition, packed with anthocyanins, vitamin C, flavonoids, and quercetin.

In formulas, elderberry contributes its extraordinary antioxidant profile and its deep, warm pigmentation. Its natural color, a rich burgundy-purple, can contribute subtle toning to finished formulas, while its flavonoids provide meaningful antioxidant protection at the skin surface.

How It Works

Elderberry's anthocyanins are among the most potent natural antioxidants available in plant form, neutralizing free radicals and supporting skin protection against environmental oxidative stress. Its quercetin content contributes anti-inflammatory support, and its vitamin C content supports collagen synthesis. As a botanical in soap its natural pigments contribute warm, complex tones to the finished bar.
