Linum usitatissimum
Flaxseed oil, also known as linseed oil, is cold-pressed from the seeds of the flax plant, one of the oldest cultivated crops in human history. It is one of the richest plant sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid that plays a critical role in maintaining the skin's barrier function and supporting a balanced inflammatory response.
In skincare formulas, flaxseed oil is valued for its ability to soothe and support reactive or sensitized skin. Its exceptionally high omega-3 content makes it a meaningful active ingredient in formulas designed for dry, mature, or inflammation-prone skin types.
How It Works
Alpha-linolenic acid is an essential fatty acid that the body cannot synthesize on its own. Applied topically it helps replenish the skin's lipid barrier, reduces transepidermal water loss, and supports a more balanced skin response. Because it is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, flaxseed oil is best used in combination with more stable oils and in formulas that will be used regularly to maintain freshness.
