Calcium Montmorillonite / Palygorskite
Fuller's earth is a naturally occurring sedimentary clay with one of the oldest recorded uses in personal care. Its name comes from the fulling process used in medieval textile production, where it was used to draw lanolin and oils from raw wool. One of the most absorbent clays available, it has a long history of use in both skincare and haircare across South Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean, where its remarkable oil-drawing capacity made it a valued cleansing and purifying ingredient.
In our formulas, fuller's earth is used in small amounts in formulas designed for deeply congested or very oily skin and scalp, where its exceptional absorbency can provide a level of cleansing that gentler clays cannot match.
How It Works
Fuller's earth's montmorillonite content gives it one of the highest ion-exchange capacities of any cosmetic clay, meaning it attracts and binds to positively charged impurities, oils, and toxins with exceptional efficiency. It also has mild bleaching properties from its natural magnesium oxide content, which can help brighten dull or congested skin over time. It is used in carefully balanced amounts to ensure effective cleansing without excessive dryness.
