Juniperus communis

Juniper is one of the most widely distributed conifers in the world, growing from the Arctic to the Mediterranean and across North America and Asia. Its small, blue-grey berries, technically modified cones, have been used medicinally and culinarily for thousands of years, most famously as the botanical that gives gin its distinctive character. In European herbal tradition juniper berries are valued for their purifying, toning, and circulation-supporting properties.

At Le Silo Bleu juniper berries bring a clean, woody, resinous character to our soap formulas along with their well-documented astringent and toning properties. They are particularly well-suited to formulas designed for oily or congestion-prone skin and scalp, and to body care formulas where their warming, circulatory character is most beneficial.

How It Works

Juniper berry's alpha-pinene and sabinene content contribute antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, while its terpinen-4-ol, the same compound that gives tea tree oil much of its antimicrobial activity, provides additional purifying support. Its natural tannins contribute astringency and toning, and its warming aromatic character makes it a natural fit for men's grooming and body care formulas where a clean, resinous scent profile is desired.
