Litsea cubeba

Litsea essential oil, also known as may chang, is steam distilled from the small, pepper-like fruits of the Litsea cubeba tree, native to China and Southeast Asia. Its aroma is bright, intensely lemony, and slightly fruity, similar to lemongrass but lighter, sweeter, and more delicate. In Chinese medicine the fruits and leaves of the litsea tree have been used for centuries for their warming and invigorating properties.

In our soap and candle formulas litsea is a valuable citrus alternative to lemon or lemongrass, its high citral content gives it exceptional scent throw and longevity in cold process soap, where true lemon essential oil fades quickly. It brings an uplifting, sparkling brightness to blends that is genuinely difficult to achieve with other citrus oils.
