Maris Sal
Mediterranean sea salt is harvested from the evaporation of Mediterranean seawater, a tradition practiced in the salt marshes of France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy for thousands of years. The most celebrated of all Mediterranean sea salts is the French fleur de sel, hand-harvested from the surface of salt pans in Guérande and the Île de Ré, but the broader category of Mediterranean sea salt encompasses a range of mineral-rich, naturally harvested salts that carry the character of their coastal origins.
At Le Silo Bleu, Mediterranean sea salt connects our formulas to the coastal traditions of France and the salt-harvesting culture of the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts that run through both our Long Island and Normandy homes. In salt bar soaps it creates a uniquely firm, long-lasting bar with an almost creamy skin feel.
How It Works
In soap formulas sea salt at high percentages dramatically accelerates saponification and hardens the bar rapidly, creating a dense, firm bar that lasts exceptionally well. The salt also modifies the lather character, producing a creamier, more lotion-like foam rather than large bubbles. In bath formulas, it dissolves to release its natural mineral content, softening the water and contributing to a more relaxing, skin-comfortable soak.
