Synthetic Fluorphlogopite / Natural Mica
Micas are a family of naturally occurring silicate minerals that form in thin, flat, reflective layers — giving them their characteristic shimmer and sparkle. In cosmetics both natural and synthetic micas are used as colorants, with synthetic micas (fluorphlogopite) increasingly preferred for their consistent color, purity, and ethical sourcing — natural mica mining has historically raised serious child labor concerns in some regions.
At Le Silo Bleu we use cosmetic-grade micas to bring color, shimmer, and visual depth to our soap formulas. Micas are responsible for the vibrant swirls, pearlescent sheens, and rich color palettes that make artisan cold process soap a genuinely visual art form.
How It Works
Micas are mineral-based pigments that are inert, stable, and skin-safe at cosmetic usage rates. They are dispersed in a small amount of oil before being incorporated into soap batter, ensuring even color distribution. Unlike botanical colorants, micas do not fade, morph, or change color during saponification or cure, what you formulate is what you get in the finished bar. They are available in virtually every color of the spectrum, from naturalistic earth tones to vivid jewel tones and pearlescent metallics.
A Note on Sourcing
We source cosmetic-grade micas from suppliers who can verify ethical sourcing standards. The mica industry has faced scrutiny for child labor in some mining regions, which is why we prioritize suppliers with transparent supply chain practices.
You can find mica colorants in many of our soaps and shower steamers, sugar scrubs, and body butters.
