Optiphen / Optiphen Plus
Functional, Actives & Additives
Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol / Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid
Optiphen and Optiphen Plus are broad-spectrum preservative systems used in select formulas alongside or as an alternative to Geogard ECT. Optiphen combines phenoxyethanol with caprylyl glycol, while Optiphen Plus adds sorbic acid for enhanced protection against yeasts and molds. Both are paraben-free, formaldehyde-free, and designed to perform effectively in a wide range of formula types and pH ranges.
We use these preservatives selectively, in formulas where Geogard ECT alone may not provide optimal coverage, or where formula pH or composition makes a different preservative system more appropriate. Preservation is non-negotiable in water-containing formulas, and selecting the right preservative for each formula is an important part of responsible cosmetic formulation.
How It Works
Phenoxyethanol, the primary active component, disrupts bacterial cell membranes, preventing microbial growth across a broad spectrum of organisms. Caprylyl glycol enhances this antimicrobial activity and provides additional moisturizing properties as a humectant. In Optiphen Plus, sorbic acid extends coverage to yeasts and molds that may be more resistant to phenoxyethanol alone. Together they provide comprehensive preservation at low usage rates that are effective without causing sensitization in the vast majority of users.
