Polysorbate 20 is a mild, non-ionic emulsifier and solubilizer derived from sorbitol and lauric acid, typically from coconut or palm kernel sources. It is the lighter-duty sibling of Polysorbate 80, with a lower hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) that makes it better suited to solubilizing lighter fragrance and essential oil loads in water-based formulas such as facial toners, hair mists, and body sprays.

In leave-in detangler mists and similar water-based spray formulas, Polysorbate 20 allows essential oil and fragrance components to disperse evenly throughout the water base without separating, ensuring each application delivers a consistent sensory experience and preventing oil pooling that could cause irritation or uneven distribution.

How It Works

Polysorbate 20's amphiphilic molecular structure,with both water-loving and oil-loving components, allows it to surround small droplets of fragrance or essential oil and suspend them evenly in a water base. This solubilization creates a stable, clear or slightly translucent formula that remains evenly mixed throughout its shelf life without shaking. At low fragrance loads it provides complete solubilization with minimal impact on the formula's overall sensory profile.
