Polysorbate 80
Functional, Actives & Additives
Polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate
Polysorbate 80 is a non-ionic emulsifier and solubilizer derived from sorbitol and oleic acid, typically from plant sources such as sunflower or palm kernel oil. In cosmetic formulation it serves the critical function of allowing oil-soluble ingredients, particularly fragrance oils and essential oils,to disperse evenly in water-based formulas without separating or floating to the surface.
In our shower steamer formulas, polysorbate 80 is an essential functional ingredient that prevents fragrance oils from pooling on the shower floor during use, instead emulsifying them into the water and steam where their aromatic properties can be fully experienced. Without it, the skin-contact fragrance pooling in a shower steamer would be both wasteful and potentially irritating.
How It Works
Polysorbate 80's molecular structure has both water-loving (hydrophilic) and oil-loving (lipophilic) components,a dual character that allows it to surround oil droplets and suspend them evenly in water. This emulsification is what makes shower steamers safe and effective; the fragrance diffuses evenly into the steam rather than concentrating in droplets that could cause skin sensitization. It is used at carefully calculated percentages relative to the fragrance load to ensure complete emulsification.
