Red thyme essential oil is steam distilled from the thymol chemotype of common thyme,a specific variety of Thymus vulgaris whose dominant constituent is thymol, the most potently antimicrobial of the thyme chemotypes. The "red" designation refers to the color of the unrefined distillate, which carries a reddish hue from its high phenolic content. It has a more intense, medicinal, and assertive character than other thyme varieties, and is used in formulas where its powerful antimicrobial action is the primary goal.

Red thyme's thymol content is one of the most potent naturally occurring antimicrobial compounds,effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria and fungi. It is used in formulas targeting scalp imbalance, oily or congested skin, and conditions where microbial imbalance is a contributing factor. It must be used at appropriate dilution rates as phenol-rich oils can be sensitizing at higher concentrations.

Red thyme is a potential skin sensitizer. Use at appropriate dilution rates. Avoid use on sensitive or damaged skin. Not recommended for use during pregnancy.
