Rosa damascena - Floral Water
Rose hydrosol - also known as rose water or rose floral water - is the aromatic water co-produced during the steam distillation of rose petals for essential oil production. As steam passes through the rose petals and condenses, it captures water-soluble aromatic compounds that do not appear in the essential oil - giving rose hydrosol a gentler, more subtle character than rose absolute or otto, while retaining the flower's natural skin-soothing and toning properties.
Rose water has one of the longest documented histories of any cosmetic ingredient - used by ancient Persian, Arab, and European physicians and beauty practitioners for centuries. In French perfumery and pharmacy traditions, eau de rose remains a staple of gentle skin care.
How It Works
Rose hydrosol's natural phenylethanol content provides mild antimicrobial and skin-toning properties, while its flavonoid content contributes antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support. Its gentle astringency helps refine the appearance of pores and tone the skin surface without stripping. Unlike rose essential oil or absolute, rose hydrosol can be used directly on skin without dilution - making it ideal as a toner, mist, or water phase in sensitive skin formulas.
