Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate,known as SMCT,is a gentle surfactant derived from coconut fatty acids and taurine, an amino acid found naturally in the human body. It is a key component of our shampoo bar surfactant system, working alongside SCI to produce a lather that is rich, stable, and conditioning rather than harsh or stripping.

SMCT is particularly valued for its performance in sulfate-free formulas where it delivers a satisfying cleansing experience without the aggressive surfactants,like sodium lauryl sulfate,that can damage the hair and irritate the scalp over time.

How It Works

SMCT lowers the surface tension of water, allowing it to mix with and lift oils and debris from the scalp without causing irritation. Its taurine-derived structure gives it mild conditioning properties alongside its cleansing function,meaning hair feels softer and more manageable after washing, rather than "squeaky clean" in the way that harsher surfactants can produce. It produces a stable, creamy lather that feels luxurious during use and rinses cleanly without residue.
