Trisodium Citrate
Sodium citrate is the sodium salt of citric acid,a naturally derived chelating agent produced through the fermentation of citrus sugars. In soap and skincare formulation it serves as a sequestering agent that binds to the calcium and magnesium ions present in hard water, preventing them from reacting with soap molecules and forming the insoluble scum that makes soap feel less effective in hard water areas.
For customers washing with hard water, which describes much of the United States and many parts of Europe, soap containing sodium citrate performs noticeably better, rinsing more cleanly and leaving skin feeling smoother and less "filmy" after washing.
How It Works
Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium ions that react with soap fatty acids to form calcium and magnesium salts, the white, insoluble "soap scum" that reduces lather quality and leaves a residue on skin. Sodium citrate chelates, binds to,these mineral ions before they can react with the soap, keeping them in solution and allowing the soap to perform as intended regardless of water hardness. It is used in small amounts where it is effective without affecting the formula's other properties.
