Sodium Salt of Lactic Acid

Sodium lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid,a naturally occurring compound produced during the fermentation of sugars. In cosmetic formulation it serves two distinct functions: as a natural humectant in skincare, and as a soap-hardening additive that dramatically improves unmolding time in cold process soapmaking. It is one of the most practical and reliable additives available to the cold process soap maker.

At Le Silo Bleu we use sodium lactate in our soap formulas to accelerate hardening and improve the unmolding process,particularly valuable when working with silicone molds or high-soft-oil formulas where the bar would otherwise need extended time in the mold.

How It Works

In soap, sodium lactate added to the cooled lye solution helps the soap firm up significantly faster during saponification,often allowing unmolding within 24 hours rather than the 48-72 hours that would otherwise be needed. This reduces production time without affecting the final quality of the bar. As a humectant in leave-on formulas it attracts and retains moisture at the skin surface, contributing to a more comfortable, hydrated skin feel.
