Sodium Pyrrolidone Carboxylic Acid
Sodium PCA is the sodium salt of pyroglutamic acid, one of the primary components of the skin's own Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), the complex mixture of water-soluble compounds that keeps the stratum corneum hydrated and supple. As a naturally occurring component of healthy skin, sodium PCA is one of the most biocompatible humectants available, the skin recognizes and accepts it as one of its own moisture-regulating compounds.
Sodium PCA is also naturally present in hair, found in the cortex and cuticle layers where it helps maintain the hair's moisture content and flexibility. Its inclusion in our leave-in and haircare formulas mirrors what healthy hair already contains, supporting optimal moisture balance from the outside in.
How It Works
Sodium PCA is significantly more hygroscopic than glycerin, meaning it attracts and holds water more effectively per unit weight. Applied to skin or hair, it draws moisture from the surrounding environment and binds it to the surface and within the structure, maintaining a reservoir of hydration that supports softness, flexibility, and a more comfortable feel throughout the day. Its natural origin in the skin and hair means it integrates seamlessly without disrupting the skin's own moisture-regulating mechanisms.
