TiO₂
Titanium dioxide is a naturally occurring white mineral pigment mined from ilmenite and rutile ore deposits. One of the most widely used white pigments in the world, found in everything from paint to food coloring, in cosmetics it serves as both a white colorant and a UV-reflective ingredient. In soapmaking, it is used as a brightening and whitening agent that helps create clean, bright whites and vivid color contrasts in swirled and layered designs.
At Le Silo Bleu we use cosmetic-grade titanium dioxide in select soap formulas where a pure white base or bright color contrast is part of the design intention. It is skin-safe at appropriate usage rates and is one of the most stable white pigments available for cold process soap.
How It Works
Titanium dioxide works by reflecting and scattering visible light, producing an opaque white appearance. In soap, it is dispersed in a small amount of oil before being incorporated into the batter, ensuring even distribution and preventing clumping. It is chemically inert and stable; it does not react with the lye or change color during saponification, making it one of the most reliable white colorants for cold process soap. It is used in small, carefully measured amounts.
